The installer and system design often matter more than the heat pump brand. Comfort, efficiency and running costs are shaped by design decisions made before the unit is fitted.

Poor surveys, poor commissioning or poor control setup can undermine good equipment. The goal is not to become a heating engineer. It is to know what good answers sound like.

They take learning seriously

Training is not everything, but it is a good sign. Good installers keep learning beyond short minimum courses and understand hydronic design and low-temperature heating.

They can show proof

Monitoring data is useful. Flow temperatures, run hours, cycling, COP or SCOP can reveal how systems actually perform. Real outcomes matter more than marketing claims.

They carry out a proper survey

A good survey covers room requirements, radiator sizes, building fabric, pipework constraints, hot water use, electrical supply, outdoor unit location and noise.

They do proper heat loss

Room-by-room heat loss matters. Defaults should be challenged, especially for extensions, awkward rooms, glazing, draughts and suspended floors.

They understand hydronics

The system needs enough flow around the heating circuit. Pipe sizing, pressure drop and the index circuit matter, and the installer should be able to explain their approach clearly.

They offer sensible choices

Look for low flow temperatures where practical, weather compensation, sensible controls, avoided unnecessary zoning and clear trade-offs between cost, disruption and running cost.

They design hot water properly

Hot water is part of the design. Existing cylinder compatibility, coil sizing, recovery expectations and household habits all need to match real life.

They have a water quality plan

Dirty systems can hurt performance and reliability. Ask about flushing, filters and water treatment because heat pumps need good flow rates and clean pipework.

They commission properly

Commissioning should include balancing, weather curve or control setup, heating and hot water settings, and explaining the controls to the homeowner.

They provide useful references

Ask for recent customers and similar homes. Look at monitoring where available. Reviews are useful, but they should be one input, not the whole decision.

They meet baseline expectations

MCS is often required for grants such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Consumer protection schemes such as RECC or HEIS may matter, but accreditation is a baseline, not proof of design excellence.

Questions to ask before accepting a heat pump quote

  • How have you calculated heat loss?
  • Is the heat loss room-by-room?
  • What flow temperature is the system designed around?
  • What radiator changes are needed and why?
  • What pipework assumptions have been made?
  • How will you check flow rates around the system?
  • What is your approach to zoning and controls?
  • How will hot water be designed for our household?
  • What happens during commissioning?
  • What performance or running cost assumptions are being made?
  • Can I speak to recent customers with similar homes?
  • What aftercare and servicing is included?
  • What changes could affect the final price after survey?

How many quotes should you get?

Two or three good quotes is usually sensible. One quote makes comparison hard, while ten quotes is usually too many.

Serious design work takes time. Paid surveys are not automatically a bad sign, and can show that an installer takes design seriously.

Local or national installer?

Local installers may know common local housing types and local support can be easier. Some excellent specialists travel further.

National companies can offer process, scale and sharper pricing. The final decision should come down to confidence in the design, proposal and people.

Cheapest is not always best

Headline price only tells part of the story. Good design, survey work, commissioning and aftercare cost money.

Very cheap quotes may miss design detail, support or optimisation. Focus on long-term value, not just upfront cost.

This directory gives you a recommended shortlist rather than a random directory, but you should still do your own checks before accepting a quote. The installer’s work is their own, and any quote, contract, survey, design, installation, workmanship, aftercare or warranty is between you and the installer.

Most modern heat pumps can work well.

The biggest difference usually comes down to how well the system is designed, installed and commissioned. Choosing the right installer is therefore one of the most important decisions you will make.
