Training is not everything, but it is a good sign. Good installers keep learning beyond short minimum courses and understand hydronic design and low-temperature heating.

They can show proof
Monitoring data is useful. Flow temperatures, run hours, cycling, COP or SCOP can reveal how systems actually perform. Real outcomes matter more than marketing claims.

They carry out a proper survey
A good survey covers room requirements, radiator sizes, building fabric, pipework constraints, hot water use, electrical supply, outdoor unit location and noise.

They do proper heat loss
Room-by-room heat loss matters. Defaults should be challenged, especially for extensions, awkward rooms, glazing, draughts and suspended floors.

They understand hydronics
The system needs enough flow around the heating circuit. Pipe sizing, pressure drop and the index circuit matter, and the installer should be able to explain their approach clearly.

They offer sensible choices
Look for low flow temperatures where practical, weather compensation, sensible controls, avoided unnecessary zoning and clear trade-offs between cost, disruption and running cost.

They design hot water properly
Hot water is part of the design. Existing cylinder compatibility, coil sizing, recovery expectations and household habits all need to match real life.

They have a water quality plan
Dirty systems can hurt performance and reliability. Ask about flushing, filters and water treatment because heat pumps need good flow rates and clean pipework.

They commission properly
Commissioning should include balancing, weather curve or control setup, heating and hot water settings, and explaining the controls to the homeowner.

They provide useful references
Ask for recent customers and similar homes. Look at monitoring where available. Reviews are useful, but they should be one input, not the whole decision.

They meet baseline expectations
MCS is often required for grants such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Consumer protection schemes such as RECC or HEIS may matter, but accreditation is a baseline, not proof of design excellence.
